How to Build a Budget That Actually Works
Most people hear the word "budget" and immediately think of spreadsheets, restrictions, and giving up their morning coffee. But budgeting doesn't have to be complicated or miserable. In fact, the simpler your budget, the more likely you are to actually stick to it. Whether you're self-employed, working a regular job, or managing a household on a tight income, a budget is just a plan for your money. And having a plan — even a rough one — puts you firmly in control. Here's how to build one that works.

## Step 1: Write Down Everything You Earn
Before you can manage your money, you need to know how much is coming in. This sounds obvious, but many people have a rough idea rather than an exact number.
Write down every source of income you have each month:
- Your wage or salary (after tax)
- Self-employed income or freelance payments
- Benefits, child support, or rental income
- Any side income
If your income changes month to month — which is common if you're self-employed — use a rough average from the last three months.
Tip: The SmartPIG app lets you track client payments and income as you go, so you always know exactly how much has come in. [Download SmartPIG on iOS or Android]
## Step 2: List All Your Monthly Expenses
Next, write down every regular expense. Don't skip anything — even small costs add up. A good list of monthly expenses usually includes:
Fixed costs (same every month):
- Rent or mortgage
- Car payment
- Insurance
- Subscriptions (Netflix, gym, etc.)
- Loan repayments
Variable costs (change each month):
- Groceries
- Fuel
- Eating out and takeaways
- Clothing and personal care
- Entertainment
If you're not sure what you spend, check your last two or three bank statements. You might be surprised.

## Step 3: Subtract Your Expenses From Your Income
Once you have both lists, the maths is simple:
Income − Expenses = What's left over
If the number is positive, great — you have money to save or put towards a goal. If it's zero or negative, something needs to change. Either you need to bring in more money, or cut back on spending somewhere.
This is where seeing everything laid out in one place really helps.
## Step 4: Give Every Pound (or Dollar) a Job
A budget that actually works is one where you decide in advance what each pound will do — rather than wondering where it all went at the end of the month.
A simple way to do this is the 50/30/20 rule:
- 50% of your income goes on needs (rent, bills, food)
- 30% goes on wants (eating out, hobbies, treats)
- 20% goes on savings or paying off debt
You don't have to follow this exactly. It's just a helpful starting point. Adjust the percentages to suit your life.

## Step 5: Check In Every Month
A budget isn't a one-time task — it's a monthly habit. At the end of each month, spend ten minutes checking:
- Did I stay within my spending categories?
- Did anything unexpected come up?
- Do I need to adjust anything next month?
It gets quicker every time, and you'll start to feel more confident about your money over time.
